Cells

Unit Summary

According to cell theory all organisms are composed of one or more cells. Within cells are organelles, which have specific structures that support its function. Many functions of these organelles are similar to the function of the organism itself. Animals and plants are built upon several levels of organization, starting with cells working together, and building to a functional organism.

Essential Questions

  • Why does a rock not apply to cell theory?
  • What structures do most cells have in common?
  • Plant cells have a cell wall and chloroplasts. Why do animals cells not have these organelles?
  • How do different parts of the plant and animal cell keep the cell alive?
  • What functions do individual cells perform that are similar to the functions of our bodies?
  • In complex organisms, what are the levels of organization?
