Heredity
"Where the real DNAgents work"

Unit Summary

Students will compare the results of asexual and sexual reproduction, including the advantages and disadvantages of each type of reproduction. Students will describe heredity as the passing of genetic information through generations. Students will recognize that inherited traits are determined by genetic material organized within the nucleus. Students will understand the difference between prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells. Finally, students will understand that traits can be dominant, recessive, or co-dependent.

Essential Questions

  • Where is genetic material found?
  • What are some reproductive differences between prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells?
  • How do offspring from asexual reproduction compare to offspring from sexual reproduction?
  • In sexual reproduction, why are offspring from the same parents not identical?
  • What role does heredity play in determining our traits?
