Organic Compounds

Unit Summary

This unit will be about identifying that organic compounds contain carbon and other elements such as hydrogen, oxygen, phosphorus, nitrogen, or sulfur. Students will recognize how large molecules are broken down into smaller molecules. Students will understand chemical and physical properties of matter and that changes in matter involve the rearrangement of atoms. Finally, students will demonstrate an understanding of physical and chemical changes and their properties.

Essential Questions

  • Why is  C12H22O11 (sugar) identified as an organic compound?
  • What are the five elements that can combine with carbon to form organic compounds?
  • What can happen to large molecules (such as sugar) when they undergo a chemical change?
  • How are organic compounds important to living things?
